I swear I could feel his heart racing through his jacket! He held me tighter than he had ever held me before! He had just asked me to marry him and I don’t think I actually answered him! I don’t think I even looked at the ring! I just know his heart was pounding and I didn’t want to let him go! Finally, his warm hand slipped this beautiful ring on my *freezing* little finger! People start clapping and cheering and a random man gives Matt a hug and says “I wanna be da FIRST New Yorkah to congratulate chu, man!” (with the accent and everything!) I was already all teary eyed when we walked inside and received the SWEETEST congratulatory message from Micah-Man. He said “congratulations, Aunt Rissa” uuuuhhh! I’m a puddle on the floor!
This was January 2012.
In Dec 2011, Matt found $99 ROUND TRIP flights to Jersey which is just a train ride away from NYC where his brother and sister-in-law live! We booked the flights for Thursday Jan 5, 2012! My best friend swore he would propose but I honestly had NO idea he even had a ring! I had never been anywhere that cold ever, so needless to say I wasn’t prepared. If you want to see what I would take today on a cold trip to NYC, check it out here.
We get there, do a little touristing Friday, but Saturday was the day we went and did ALL the big stops. Time Square, SoHo, Manhattan, shopping, and all the walking in between then grabbed a hot dog from a street cart, right before getting on the Staten Island Ferry… Where you can see the entire skyline, in the sunset. We were looking out and he starts telling me all the sweet things he thinks and feels about me. I can tell he is really nervous, then… he gets on one knee, and asks that little question!
Marissa, will you marry me?
AH! I’m pretty sure I just squealed and held him as tight as I could!
Thankfully my brother in law Larry was taking pictures the whole time, because now you get to see what babies we were!
7 years have FLOWN by, but my goodness we have grown so much and have learned to choose each other over and over. We have built our lives together through angst and bliss. I am so proud of the man he’s become and is continuing to be. I am so honored to have a son who get’s to witness first hand the power of a unified home where both husband and wife are looking for ways to out-serve the other, not to compete or to twist around but to honor and display genuine humility!
7 years have flown by… I am eager for the next seven!
